About Us
"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"
The Next Element Academy is a professionally run Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and Muay Thai academy dedicated to excellence in instruction, character, and community. Locally owned and veteran-led, our academy has proudly served the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area since November 2018, providing world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training for students of all ages and experience levels.
At The Next Element Academy, we believe martial arts are more than a hobby or profession— they are a vehicle for personal growth, discipline, confidence, and lifelong learning. Our programs uphold the highest technical standards while fostering a welcoming, community-focused environment where every student, children and adults, can thrive.
Our Founder
Derrick Kennington has trained in Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai, and self defense for more than 20 years, working with students of all ages and abilities. He served 12 years in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant and serving as a combatives instructor for joint military forces, including the USAF Phoenix Ravens.
Professor Kennington earned his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino in 2014. After more than 20 professional fights, he retired from competition in January 2018 to dedicate himself fully to coaching and teaching. Since 2018, he has owned and operated Next Element Academy, where he continues to share his experience, discipline, and passion for martial arts.
Above all, Derrick loves Jesus, being a dad, and is committed to helping others grow both on and off the mats.
